I was only 3 years old when my father passed away, and a year later, my mother also passed away. Life became filled with misery and hopelessness. Our relatives, who claimed to love us, all left us. Torture and agony became a part of our daily lives. We wandered the streets with no shelter or food. After about a year, one of my uncles offered to help. He took me and my sibling to one of the abandoned rooms at the back of his compound. The room was truly abandoned. It was in such a tattered state that no one lived there. It became a place for rats, mosquitoes, and cockroaches to stay. On rainy days, it turned into a river rather than a home.
